An Old But True Word…

Periodically we would like to bring you an “old but true” word from HCF’s founder and first director, O.E. Phillips:

Even Founder Phillips missed a deadline once in a while.  In the early part of HCF’s history, Phillips wrote a letter “since we are not sending out a Fellowship Bulletin until sometime in November.”  In the letter, he shared that “the Lord has been good to us and to all our workers which makes our hearts glad.”

He went on to tell of the work of early missionaries Jacobs (see our post here on Rev. Sanderson), Faulkner, Whitney, and Warmer,  and then took the chance to wax philosophical and nearly lyrical in his prose about the “evidence of God’s constant care,” even in the natural world:

For centuries men have had a vague idea of “paths in the sea” or as we would call them ocean currents…Most of us know about the famous Gulf Stream, the wonderful river that originates in the Gulf of Mexico.  Scientists are now discovering that the Gulf Stream is one of an intricate system of currents that lace the oceans…And yet an even more astounding discovery has been made.  The rivers that flow just under the waves have other rivers under them—sometimes, but not always, in the same direction. Under the Gulf Stream as it speeds north is a body of still ocean water, and under that an unmapped river making its way south.  From ocean to ocean flow great rivers that baffle the greatest of all scientists…The only answer is that our great God created and maintains them for the good of all the earth.

He concluded with a final observation that is as true today as then, and will always be:

Surely “the fool hath said in his heart that there is no God.”  You, who have a part in the work of Hebrew Christian Fellowship help us to distribute unimpeachable evidence of God and His care.  All men must meet their Creator one of these days and the Bible is the only guide book that tells how to meet Him.  In every case we point out that Christ is the answer.  We appreciate your prayers and cooperation with us in this undertaking.

Sincerely yours in Him,

O.E. Phillips, Director

An Old But True Word…

Periodically we would like to bring you an “old but true” word from HCF’s founder and first director, O.E. Phillips.  Here’s a start:

In the 1959 edition of The Fellowship Bulletin, Phillips began an article entitled “The Judgement of Sin” with this statement:

Before one can understand God’s judgement on sin, one must know what sin is and what it does.  Sin is the seat of all tragedies, murders, thefts, falsehoods, blasphemies, evil thoughts, hypocrisies, broken hearts, broken homes, race hatred, strife between labor and capital, wars, famines, pestilences, sickness and death.  Sin makes wives untrue, husbands unfaithful and children rebellious.  If we could do away with sin the troubles of the world would be at an end.

Never pulling punches, Phillips goes on to point out the only solution to this source of all strife for all peoples:  the Messiah Himself.  Much has changed since 1959, but humanity’s problem of sin (and its only remedy) has not.
